HOW TO LAYER CLOTHING AND SURVIVE THOSE “IN-BETWEEN” SEASON MONTHS

In the transitional months of March, April, May, and often even June, the weather and temperature can be unpredictable. Stores, magazines and fashion experts of all kinds excitedly encourage the latest, hot off-the-runway looks for spring and summer, and you would love to happily oblige and embrace sheer, flowing materials and glamorous beach inspired frocks. However it seems that the chilly thermostat can sometimes suggest otherwise. The solution: Layer your clothing!

However, before you go and get too excited about this innovative idea, there are a few guidelines to follow so that your look remains chic and put-together. Trust us - it's very easy to accidentally end up with a frumpy and dumpy layered look, so take note of these important tips.

The most important rule when layering clothing is that of balance and proportion. Revert back to your tenth grade art class and try to remember the simple design principles, which state the importance of an even distribution of weight.

What does this mean? Well first, be sure to avoid large, heavy and bulky garments for the bottom layer. You want to stay warm and still look sophisticated in your layered ensemble. With an oversized under-layer, your outfit can appear inside-out and oh-so wrong. Even an article that is too heavy on top placed over a light bottom piece will make too strong of a statement and can make you seem entirely out of proportion.

Obviously, the lighter piece of clothing should work as the bottom layer and to contrast, place the heavier item as the top layer. Build your outfit from the inside out. Examine your wardrobe to establish which weights and textures work together and which ones don't. Generally, if you are going with a wild print, texture, colour or stripe with one layer, you should choose a simple, neutral or more subdued piece for the other layers. Unless you have a lot of confidence, look like a supermodel or just don't care what anyone thinks, you won't likely pull it off.

The best part of layering is that it gives an entire new identity to many of your wardrobe staples and favourites that have been kicking around in your closet for years. You're also able to get away with wearing the same pieces more often, and in a variety of ways.

So go ahead and boldly wear whatever it is that your heart desires and that the new trends dictate. Experiment with those leftover winter sweaters and cardigans that you were about to store by slipping them under a little dress or adding a vibrant, new belt to them. And please, feel free to peel off that top layer as soon as the sun comes out to shine and bathes us all in its glorious warmth.
