CARE FOR SILK
March 24, 2008

Luxury can be easily defined by one word: silk. Whether a silk shirt, blouse, skirt, pant or scarf, this sensuous piece is likely one of your most prized articles of clothing. The softness, smoothness and pure elegance that silk can conjure is something no other natural textile can compete with. As a fiber, silk has been used for centuries and is one of the oldest materials in the world.

Care for silk

Versatility, moisture absorption and shape retention are just a few of the great benefits of silk and make it all the more desirable. The wearability of silk is renowned, providing added comfort and elegance. Wear silk in the summer and you will stay cool and comfortable and wear it in the winter and you will remain warm. Silk has a natural luster, which adds an easy, shimmery element to any glamorous ensemble. The drape and fluidity of silk is perfect for eveningwear and flattering to many figures.

Washing silk

Best of all, this wondrous material is washable- making it versatile and a staple to any wardrobe. The natural protein fiber can be easily hand washed and shrinkage is minimal, depending on the tightness of the garment’s weave. After washing your silk garment, avoid wringing or twisting the soaked material. Don’t use an automatic dryer but rather roll the article of clothing in a towel to dry. Because of its excellent absorption rate, silk dries very quickly.

To remove a water spot on your silk, first let the spot dry. After all moisture has been absorbed, use asmall part of the undamaged silk to gently rub the spot away.

To remove an oil spot, use a silk-friendly shampoo (one that does not contain wax or petroleum). To remove static from your silk, a soft hair conditioner (again, without wax or petroleum based ingredients) will work well.

Ironing silk

Be careful when ironing your silk garments. The temperature gage on your iron should indicate a setting appropriate for a silk material. Be cautious of ironing on a level that is too high as this may yellow your fabric. It is best to either steam your garment or at least cover with a cloth as you iron out any wrinkles. However, if you’re ever unsure as to how to carefor your delicate silk garment, its best to bring it to a dry cleaner and let the professionals assess the situation and recommend a safe cleaning process.

Over time, natural sunlight and perspiration will wear down and weaken the silk fiber, just as it does for many textiles.

So, sport that sexy silk number for any occasion and during any season because it will wear well and make you feel great. Whether in spring, summer, autumn or winter - celebrate the silkworm!
